Added Values for You and Your Donors

Blood donors are often volunteers. Donating blood is an act of generosity and kindness that cannot be taken for granted and it is important to make the process as smooth and safe as possible. By using a point-of-care hemoglobin testing method with laboratory accuracy, you can help make sure that only individuals with sufficient hemoglobin levels are eligible as donors.

Screening prospective blood donors for low hemoglobin (Hb) is a well-established practice with two purposes. One is to protect the donor’s health. Another to ascertain the quality of donated blood – the number of red cells collected need to be high enough to meet the recipient’s need.

Is Your Hemoglobin Screening Method Only a Matter of Yes or No?

The Pass/Fail method using copper sulfate (CuSO4) solutions of fixed specific gravity is the traditional procedure used by donation facilities for screening donors for low Hb. The method is cheap and easy, which is why it is still used, but by virtue of its subjective visual interpretation, a number of donors may be inappropriately passed or deferred. Therefore, use of copper sulfate fails to fulfill one of its objectives; protection of the donor.

When using an accurate, objective and quantitative Hb method for primary testing, the deferral rate can be optimized, thus meeting the increased need for blood without putting donors’ or recipients’ health at risk. Reliable point-of-care testing makes the process more efficient and cost-effective, allowing you to identify eligible donors quickly as well as accurately.

Several years ago, the Kokilaben blood bank decided to change screening method from copper sulphate (CuSO4) to a modern point-of-care (POC) technology. Read the full story.
